M
mainsail (pron. “mains’l”)
the primary sail of any boat. In a square-rigger this is the lowest sail on the main mast. On a Bermudan or lug-rigged vessel this is the boomed sail with its luff attached to the main mast. Mainsails used to provide the principal driving force of a yacht. On Bermudan rigs, this task has, on some points of sailing, been taken over by the genoa or the spinnaker.
make fast to
to tie a line to something.
malaria
see mosquito.
Manacles, the
a rocky reef off the east coast of the Lizard Peninsular in Cornwall, England. In the occasional desperate search for mackerel to use as shark bait, Robin Vinnicombe used to take Huntress right inside the Manacles. No big deal in the conditions at the time—other than the fact that I was onboard. It becomes quite alarming when you cannot see the way out. . . . (And what a wonderfully horrible name for a reef that has taken many seafarers over the centuries.)
manatee
a sea cow with a rounded tail flipper, living in shallow waters of the tropical Atlantic, threatened with extinction. See cocaine.
man o’ war
a man o’ war was ship built for the purpose of combat at sea. It should be noted however that even trading vessels would carry some cannon for defensive purposes, especially against privateers and pirates. This is almost unheard-of in the 21st century; except in the case of tankers and container ships making passage through the pirate-infested waters of Southeast Asia and around the Horn of Africa. See pirates.
man overboard (MOB)
see person in water.
man rope
a rope to hold on to when going up or down a companionway or accommodation ladder; unclear what women are supposed to hold on to.
Marconi rig
a really tall mast used with a Bermudan sail plan; having a mast that supports lots of antenna is not good enough, I’m afraid. Named after Guglielmo Marconi, who certainly once held the world record for tallest (radio) mast stepped on the hard.
Marie Celeste
The commonly used but wrong name for an American brig that was found mysteriously abandoned in the North Atlantic in 1872. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was probably responsible for this; long before he started writing the Sherlock Holmes stories he published a weird speculation that the “Marie” Celeste had been hijacked by a “black power” terrorist group.
See Mary Celeste.
Marigot Bay
On the west coast of St. Lucia in the Windward Islands, Marigot Harbor combines an exquisite natural beauty with being a pretty-near perfect hurricane hole. Surrounded by steep forested hills rising to 250m (c800ft), this tiny bay has become a popular anchorage for visiting yachtsmen (maybe too popular these days). Even if you have parked your vessel in the Rodney Bay Marina to the north, Marigot Bay is still worth a visit for lunch or an evening drink. It is not too far by taxi or you could rent a 4WD and include it in a tour of the island. The bay is accessed via a narrow track off the main coast road that runs between the capital of Castries and the main airport at the southern tip of the island.
